Cost of living in Södertälje

Is Södertälje cheaper than Stockholm?

Yes, clearly. Södertälje is in Stockholm County and reachable by commuter train in about 35–45 minutes, but housing costs a fraction of central Stockholm. The city also has one of Sweden's largest shares of residents with a foreign background and strong, established communities, which makes it popular with newcomers. In short: much of the Stockholm region's jobs and connections, at a lower housing cost.

Rent and housing

The biggest landlord is the municipal company Telge Bostäder, which allocates first-hand contracts by queue time. The queue is shorter than in Stockholm — from a few months in less sought-after areas up to 3–5 years for central or newly built flats. Second-hand costs 20–50% more. Buying is cheap: a co-op flat costs around a third of the price in central Stockholm.

• First-hand: studio ~5,500–7,500 kr, one-bed ~7,500–9,500 kr, two-bed ~9,000–12,000 kr (new-builds higher)

Heating and water are usually included in the rent at Telge Bostäder. Södertälje is in electricity zone SE3. On top of the rent you pay electricity, home insurance, broadband and mobile.

Food and eating out

Food prices are as elsewhere in the country, but Södertälje has an unusually rich choice of Middle Eastern shops, bakeries and halal stores, especially around Ronna, Geneta and the centre. That makes staples like rice, beans, spices and meat both cheap and easy to find. Lidl and Willys are cheapest among the big chains.

Getting around

Södertälje is in the SL zone, so an ordinary SL monthly pass covers both local transport and the commuter train into Stockholm. The commuter train (lines 40 and 41) takes about 35–45 minutes to Stockholm City, and you need no extra ticket. A car is cheaper here than in Stockholm — parking is easier and there is no congestion tax. In the second half of 2026 the monthly pass is temporarily halved.

Neighbourhoods and good to know
