Registration goes through UHR — and only for a window

The citizenship test is administered by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), and registration goes through them. You do not book the test with the Migration Agency, with your municipality or with any private operator — and nobody can register on your behalf for a fee.

The first official sitting was on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan, and the test that day was free of charge. UHR has not announced the next test date. UHR's own information is what counts when you plan travel or time off.

Register only through UHR's official channels. Sites offering to handle your registration for payment have nothing to do with the test.

What to have ready before you register

Registration goes faster if you have your details to hand: personal information, valid identification, and contact details you actually check — your confirmation and any notices go wherever you say.

• Valid photo ID of a type accepted at the test centre
• Your Swedish personal identity number or coordination number
• Current address, email address and phone number
• Details of any adjustments you need at the sitting

Check that your ID stays valid right up to test day. A passport or ID card that expires in between causes problems that are easy to avoid and hard to solve on the spot. Which documents are accepted is specified by UHR.

Fee and test venue

The August 2026 test was free of charge. The fee for later tests is SEK 2,000 under the ordinance on the citizenship test, charged from tests held in 2027 onwards. Check with UHR how and when to pay before you register, since an unpaid fee usually means the registration is not complete.

The 15 August 2026 test was held at Stockholmsmässan, so there was no location to choose for that sitting. UHR has not published where later tests will be held. UHR states which location applies when a new sitting opens.

• Plan the journey in good time if you live away from the test venue
• Check with UHR which locations apply to later sittings

On test day

Arrive early. Test centres have a fixed start time, and anyone turning up after the test has begun risks not being admitted. Expect a queue at the door and allow a margin for delays on the way.

• Bring accepted photo ID — without it you cannot sit the test
• No aids are permitted: no notes, books or dictionaries
• Phones must be switched off and stowed as the centre instructs
• Follow the invigilator's instructions on seating and breaks

The exact rules on admission, permitted belongings and what happens if you arrive late are issued by UHR ahead of the sitting. Read your notice carefully when it arrives — most of what goes wrong on the day is already answered there.

How you get your result

Results are not given out at the test centre. Marking and notification are handled by UHR, and how long it takes and how the result reaches you are specified by them. Keep the contact details you gave at registration up to date until your result arrives.

If you fail, the test can be retaken at a later sitting on the terms UHR sets. If you pass, the knowledge requirement is met — but you still apply for citizenship to the Migration Agency, which assesses all the requirements together.
