Sweden closes the notification route for most people

Did you grow up in Sweden but hold a foreign passport, and were you counting on the quick way to citizenship? That way, called notification, mostly closed on 6 June 2026.

Notification (anmälan, a short form instead of a full application) was simpler and cheaper than an ordinary application. From 6 June 2026 it is open to far fewer people. Most people now have to apply the ordinary way, under the new stricter rules.

Who can still use notification

The ordinary citizenship application now replaces the short notification form for many.

The notification route stays open, but mainly for these groups:

  • Nordic citizens, under the agreements between the Nordic countries.
  • People born in Sweden who have been stateless since birth.
  • Children who become citizens as a result of a parent's notification.
  • Certain children born abroad before 1 April 2015 to a father who is a Swedish citizen.

If you belong to one of these groups, the short notification form and its lower fee still apply to you. It is faster than naturalisation (an ordinary citizenship application that Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency, decides).

Who loses the notification route

The biggest group affected is young people with a foreign citizenship who grew up in Sweden. Before 6 June 2026, a young adult who had lived here for years could often become a citizen by notification. Now that person has to apply the ordinary way.

Former Swedish citizens who wanted their citizenship back by notification also lose that route. So do stateless children and young adults who are not covered by the born in Sweden rule above.

For these groups the ordinary application means the new rules: eight years of hemvist (the time you have lived in Sweden), a self-support requirement, and a knowledge requirement. You can read the full list on our citizenship requirements page.

What to do now

If you were about to send a notification, check first whether you still belong to one of the groups that can use it. A notification from someone who no longer qualifies will not make them a citizen.

Whether the notification route or the ordinary application fits your own case is for Migrationsverket to decide. A difficult case is worth putting to Migrationsverket or a qualified lawyer.
