Your uppehållstillståndskort (the residence permit card, often called UT-kort) is close to its expiry date. You do not lose your right to stay in Sweden. Your status stays the same; only the card needs renewing.
A permanent uppehållstillstånd (PUT, permanent residence permit) does not expire. The plastic card does, usually every five years. Renewing the card does not change your PUT.
What changed in April 2026
Since about 13 April 2026, Migrationsverket reminds you before your card expires. Roughly three months before the expiry date, you get a message on Min sida (your account with Migrationsverket).
The message tells you to book a time for a new photo and fingerprints. Before, you had to contact Migrationsverket yourself. Now the reminder comes to you.
How the renewal works
You still need a new photo and new fingerprints. Migrationsverket does not save the old ones, so you give them again each time.
- You get a message on Min sida about three months before the card expires.
- You book a time to visit Migrationsverket.
- You go in person for a new photo and fingerprints.
- You get a new card, and your PUT stays the same.
The card does not renew by itself. You still need to book the time and go in person. The message on Min sida is easy to miss if you do not log in often, so it is worth checking your account as the date gets close.
What to do now
If your card is near its expiry date, check Min sida for the message. If it has arrived, book a time. If it has not, you can still contact Migrationsverket yourself.
