A person living in Sweden can generally apply to bring a spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner, and children (typically under 18–21 depending on the case). In most cases the person in Sweden must meet a maintenance requirement:
- After housing costs are paid, enough must remain to support the whole household, and the home must be of adequate size.
- For 2026 the guideline figures for the amount that must remain are e.g. SEK 6,243 for a single adult, SEK 10,314 for two cohabiting adults, and per child rising by age (about SEK 3,336–5,339), reduced by child allowance.
- Some are exempt — notably permanent-residence holders, and refugees and subsidiary-protection holders who apply within three months and meet further conditions.
