Sweden's medborgarskapsprov (the citizenship test you take to become a Swedish citizen) has two parts. The part held in August 2026 checks what you know about Swedish society, not your Swedish. The separate Swedish language test is delayed until at least 2027.
The government has set a new deadline for the language test. It must be ready no later than 1 October 2027. So no one sits a Swedish language test for citizenship in 2026.
The tests come in steps
The government asked Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR), the Swedish Council for Higher Education, to build the test in steps. Two universities help UHR: Stockholm University and Gothenburg University. Stockholm University said it needed more time for the Swedish language test.
- Swedish society knowledge: first held in August 2026. This is the test that exists now.
- Swedish reading and listening: a deadline of no later than 1 October 2027.
- Swedish writing and speaking: no date set yet.
The 1 October 2027 date is a deadline, not a fixed exam day. It is the latest date the reading and listening test must be ready. It could come earlier, but not in 2026.
Some prep sites already show a date for a Swedish language test. There is no confirmed exam day yet, only this deadline.
How to show your Swedish until then
The knowledge requirement is mandatory for applicants aged 16 to 66. It covers both Swedish society and the Swedish language.
Until the language test exists, you can show your Swedish in other ways. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) gives examples: school grades, svenska för invandrare (SFI), the Swedish for immigrants course, at level D, komvux (municipal adult education), or folkhögskola (folk high school).
Migrationsverket calls these examples, not the only ways. Only Migrationsverket can tell you what counts in your case.
What this means for you
If you are invited to the test in August 2026, that is the society-knowledge test. There is no Swedish language test to book in 2026.
