The first medborgarskapsprov (citizenship test) was held on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan. To be let in you had to show a Swedish identity document.
A foreign passport was not accepted. Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR), the Swedish Council for Higher Education, runs the test. According to UHR, your Swedish personnummer (personal identity number) had to be visible on the ID document you showed.
The three ID documents UHR accepted
- An identity card for people who are folkbokförd in Sweden (registered as resident here), issued by Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency).
- A Swedish driving licence.
- A Swedish SIS-marked identity card (an ID card with a special security mark).
The list is on UHR's page about the test day, updated 17 July 2026. UHR does not list anything else as accepted.
A residence permit card (UT-kort) is not on the list. Nor is a passport from another country, whether or not you hold a Swedish residence permit.
The times on the August test day
The doors opened at 08.15. At 09.30 the hall closed, and nobody else was let in.
The test started at 10.00, and you had to be in your seat by then. Most people were finished around 12.00.
Your kallelse (the invitation from UHR) said which room you sat in. It was not on UHR's website.
What you could and could not bring
You could bring a pencil or a mechanical pencil, an eraser, and simple earplugs from a pharmacy.
- Mobile phones, smart watches, digital watches and other electronic equipment were not allowed.
- Headphones and wireless earbuds were not allowed.
- Food and drink were not allowed. UHR says that if you have diabetes, you may be allowed to bring food and drink as a special adjustment.
Two rules that decided your result
You could not leave the hall while the test was going on. According to UHR, if you left anyway you risked not getting a result at all.
You did not lose points for a wrong answer. An answer you were unsure of cost you nothing. UHR says on its page that you should not be afraid to guess.

If you are waiting for a later sitting, UHR is the one to ask what applies. Ask in good time, not in the days before the test.
