Citizenship test

When is the next Swedish citizenship test?

The next test date is not yet announced. UHR says the announcement comes in autumn. Then you must register again, because your old registration does not count.

Waiting for UHR to announce the next citizenship test date.

The first medborgarskapsprov (the knowledge test you take to become a Swedish citizen) was set for the morning of 15 August 2026, at Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm. Registration closed long before that. If you did not get a place, you are waiting for the next test.

The honest answer: the date has not been announced. But Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR, the Swedish Council for Higher Education), which runs the test, has now said when the announcement will come.

When the result comes

No date has been set yet for the next citizenship test.

UHR says the result will be published during the autumn. The exact date is not set, and UHR adds that more information will come.

When there is a result, you see it on the account you registered with. UHR reports it automatically to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency, which decides on citizenship). Migrationsverket then carries on with your application, and you do not have to send the result in yourself.

If you fail, UHR says you may get to show your knowledge again. UHR refers you to Migrationsverket for what applies in your own case. UHR has not published a pass mark.

The next test date

UHR says information about the next sitting will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn. One detail is easy to miss: when a new sitting opens, you have to register again. Your old registration does not count for the new one.

UHR has still not published where the test will be held, how many places there are, or how often it will run.

What a later test costs

The August 2026 test was free. There is a fee for later tests, and it is the government that sets it, not UHR. Under section 6 of förordning (2026:451) om medborgarskapsprov, the person who takes the test pays 2 000 kronor to UHR.

The förordning (a rule the government decides on its own) says the fee applies for the first time to tests held in 2027. It does not apply to you if you are stateless and have been granted flyktingstatus (refugee status) or a resedokument from a Swedish authority. A resedokument is a special travel document for refugees and stateless people.

So the amount and the year are already in the förordning. A test held in 2027 costs money, and a test held in 2026 does not. UHR has not published a price of its own, and no date.

What to watch

Only UHR opens registration. Watch its official page. We link to it from our page on booking the test. When a new sitting opens, that is where you will see it.

Do not pay anyone who says they can reserve a place for you. No one outside UHR can book the test, and there is no waiting list you can pay to join.

Whether you need to take the test at all is for Migrationsverket to decide in your case. The same goes for any exemption for your age or your situation. We will update this article when UHR announces the next date.
