Sweden holds its first medborgarskapsprov (the citizenship knowledge test you take to become a Swedish citizen) on 15 August 2026. The test takes place at Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm. It is on paper and in Swedish.
You can only sit this first test if Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) invited you and you signed up. Registration has closed and the sitting is full. If no letter came, there is nothing for you to book right now.
What the test looks like
Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR), the Swedish Council for Higher Education, writes and runs the test. Migrationsverket decides who is invited to take it.
Here is what UHR has confirmed about this first test:
- Date and place: 15 August 2026, at Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm.
- Format: about 60 multiple-choice questions, each with four options and one correct answer.
- Time: 90 minutes to answer.
- Language: Swedish, on paper, in a test hall.
- Cost: free for this first sitting.
What it costs later
This first test is free. From 2027, the test will cost 2 000 kronor. That fee is set in förordning (2026:451) (the government regulation for the test).
Not everyone pays. The regulation exempts stateless applicants who hold refugee status or a Swedish travel document.
What is not decided yet
UHR has not set the pass mark. This first sitting is a trial run (utprövningsprov), where UHR tries out the questions before it sets the limit.
Some sites already list a pass mark. Do not rely on those numbers. The honest answer today is that the limit is not set.
How to prepare
The test is based on one free study guide, Sverige i fokus (the official study material). UHR wrote it together with Skolverket, the Swedish National Agency for Education.
