What is the citizenship test and do I have to take it?

The citizenship test is a knowledge test run by UHR and one way to meet the requirement to show knowledge of Swedish society. The first test is on 15 August 2026. Migrationsverket decides who needs to take it — many can instead prove their knowledge with school grades, SFI or komvux.

The test is a way to show the knowledge of society that citizenship requires. It is being introduced in stages: the civics part first, with a language part planned for later. The first sitting is on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan, and the August 2026 test is free of charge.

  • UHR is responsible for the test, its content, dates and registration.
  • Migrationsverket — not UHR — decides whether you personally need to take it.
  • Knowledge can often be shown in other ways: school grades, SFI course D, komvux or folk high school.
  • The knowledge requirement applies to applicants aged 16–66.
