- A PUT can be revoked, most commonly if you move your actual residence out of Sweden.
- General rule: if you are away up to 1 year you normally keep the permit.
- Being away 1–2 years can be possible if you notify Migrationsverket in advance — the notification must arrive at least one week before you leave Sweden.
- Some groups, for example former researchers, may be away up to 2 years.
- A PUT can also be revoked if you gave false information, and under rules from 2026 for serious misconduct (the conduct requirement applies from 13 July 2026).
The time limits and notification rules can change. If you plan a longer stay abroad, read more about permanent residence and confirm what applies before you travel with Migrationsverket.
