A permanent residence permit is assessed individually by Migrationsverket. The most common conditions are:
- Having held a residence permit for a qualifying period — how long depends on your permit type, so there is no single universal number of years.
- A self-support requirement: a stable income from employment or your own business expected to last at least one year; part-time incomes can combine and Migrationsverket assesses how reliable the income is.
- A conduct requirement about how you have lived.
- Family members over 18 must each support themselves.
- Exemptions exist, for example for documented long-term reduced work capacity.
There is currently no general language or civics test for the PUT itself — that belongs to citizenship. Read more about permanent residence and check the exact qualifying period and amounts for your situation with Migrationsverket.
