Working in Sweden

How long until I can get permanent residence as a worker?

A worker can apply for a permanent residence permit after having held a work permit and worked in Sweden for at least 4 years within the last 7 years. You apply in connection with an extension application and must be able to support yourself through employment or your own business. Qualifying periods can change — check with Migrationsverket.

Updated

  • You can apply for a permanent residence permit after having held a work permit and worked in Sweden for at least 4 years within the last 7 years.
  • You apply in connection with an extension application — indicate in the e-service or on the form that you also want permanent residence.
  • To qualify you must be able to support yourself through employment or your own business and show that the income is stable going forward.
  • If you do not yet meet the conditions for a permanent permit, you can instead get an extended (temporary) work permit if its requirements are met.
  • Apply before your current permit expires — at the earliest two months before.

Qualifying periods can change. Read more about permanent residence and confirm the current conditions for your situation with Migrationsverket.
