If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland and will study for more than three months, you generally need a residence permit for studies, which must be granted before you travel to Sweden. Whether an exemption applies depends on your nationality and how long you will study.
- EU/EEA citizens need no permit — they have right of residence and may live, study and work freely. For stays over three months you must meet a condition, for example being a student.
- If you are an EU/EEA citizen staying at least one year, you must register with the Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
- Nordic citizens need neither a permit nor registration.
- Citizens from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland apply for a residence permit for studies before travelling if the studies last more than three months.
