Can I work while studying in Sweden as an international student?

This changed in 2026. Under the old rule there was no fixed hourly cap. For permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, bachelor's- and master's-level students may work at most 15 hours per week during the semester; in June–August work is unrestricted. Earlier permits keep the old rules — check with Migrationsverket.

Whether and how much you may work depends on when your residence permit was granted. The rules were tightened in 2026.

  • Old rule: no fixed weekly hour cap.
  • New rules, for permits granted on or after 11 June 2026: bachelor's- and master's-level students may work at most 15 hours per week during the semester.
  • During June, July and August work is unrestricted.
  • Certain roles (internships, student representation, some university positions) are treated separately, and doctoral students follow a different track.
  • Students whose permits were granted before 11 June 2026 keep the old rules until they renew.
