Studying in Sweden

Can I stay in Sweden to look for work after I graduate?

Yes. After completing a higher-education programme of at least two semesters, with all courses passed, you can apply (before your study permit expires) for a residence permit to look for work or explore starting a business. It is granted for up to one year after a bachelor's/master's degree. Check the conditions with Migrationsverket.

Updated

  • Condition: a completed higher-education programme in Sweden of at least two semesters, in which you have passed all the courses in the programme.
  • Apply before your current study permit expires.
  • The permit is granted for up to one year after a bachelor's or master's degree, and between one year and 18 months after a doctoral degree.
  • You must show support of at least about SEK 10,656 per month (2026 — check the current amount) and hold comprehensive health insurance if your total stay is shorter than one year.
  • If you find a job, you then apply for a work permit.

The conditions and amounts change. Confirm the exact requirements and the current support level with Migrationsverket before your study period ends.
